DEEP Forester David Irvin marks a "shelterwood" to begin the process of producing a new young forest. All trees that are part of this project are cut except for seed trees to provide plenty of space for sunlight to reach the forest floor. In about six years, these final seed trees will also be removed to release the young growth, which will include stump sprouts, previously existing seedlings, and new seedlings from the latest acorn crop.
