STORYLINE:
Six bombs exploded near bustling markets in Thailand's restive south early on Monday, killing one and wounding 12 others including a Buddhist monk, police said.
The coordinated blasts, triggered by mobile phones, exploded at about 7:30 a.m. local time (0030 GMT) near markets in the Rangae, Waeng and Srisakorn districts of Narathiwat province bordering Malaysia, Police Colonel Manoch Ananritikul said.
A soldier died on the way to the hospital while seven civilians, four soldiers and a monk were wounded, Manoch said.
He added that the suspected insurgents apparently targeted soldiers who were protecting monks because the attack occurred at the time monks go out to collect alms.
After repeated attacks, the Thai military has provided soldier escorts to Buddhist monks in predominantly Muslim Yala, Narathiwat and Pattani provinces as they make their morning rounds to collect food from the public.
More than 2,400 people have been killed since 2004 in Thailand's Muslim-majority southernmost provinces after a long-simmering Islamic separatist insurgency flared up.
