This time, we have the story of the AHOM DYNASTY to share with you.
The Brahmaputra valley of Assam witnessed the establishment of the Ahom kingdom in 1228, which remained independent for 600 years. Chaolung Sukapha, a ruler of the 13th century, founded the kingdom. The Ahoms held power over the region until it was taken over by British India in 1826 through the Treaty of Yandaboo. The Ahoms were renowned for their bravery, and even the mighty Mughal Empire could not defeat them.
Lachit Borphukan was born on November 24, 1622, and gained fame for his leadership during the Battle of Saraighat in 1671, where the Mughal forces attempted to capture Assam. The Battle of Saraighat, which took place on the banks of the Brahmaputra in Guwahati in 1671, is widely regarded as one of the most significant naval battles ever fought on a river. It was a resounding victory for the Ahoms over the Mughals.
Through his innovative naval strategies, Lachit Borphukan ensured that the Ahom army emerged victorious at Saraighat, leaving an indelible impact on India's naval force. His tactics were so effective that they inspired the strengthening of India's naval force, the rejuvenation of inland water transport, and the creation of associated infrastructure, all of which stand as a testament to his strategic genius.
In honour of Lachit Borphukan's heroism and sacrifices, the Lachit Borphukan Gold Medal is awarded to the best cadet from the National Defence Academy. This medal was established in 1999 to encourage defence personnel to follow in Borphukan's footsteps.
The Ahom troops were skilled in guerrilla warfare. On occasion, they would allow their adversaries to infiltrate their territory, only to cut off their communication lines and launch attacks from both the front and rear.
Several notable forts include Chamdhara, Saraighat, Simlagarh, Kaliabar, Kajali, and Pandu.
The Ahoms also mastered the technique of building boat bridges across the Brahmaputra River.
Most importantly, the mutual understanding between the civil and military branches, as well as the unity among the nobles, were always potent weapons for the Ahom dynasty.
Lachit Borphukan passed away on April 25, 1672.
