Our team produced and completed a 3-min previz action sequence in 2 days all by utilizing our real-time virtual production workflow. This timeline included the creative editorial process that the director took to identify camera angles and action and go back to propose new and alternate edits.
Asset preparation took one day, while mocap and shooting required an additional day. The previz included real-time VFX and lighting, meaning that our entire scene was lit according to the director’s creative specifications and thus shadows and lighting and atmospheric details interacting with lighting set up were also captured during previz.
The details captured allowed our director to get a close to final image that eventually allows for a more informed decision for principal photography. We began by capturing all action sequences in our high-speed motion capture stages. These specific stages run on Qualisys, NVIDIA’s GPUs, Unreal Engine, and Versatile’s Virtual Camera System. It has the capability of capturing motion at exceptional speeds. Slow motion was captured at 500 fps to enable us to record finer details such as muscles quivers upon impact and very small body movements that leaves a director with additional animation options when previzing as well as more realistic performance footage.
This sequence allowed us to propose multiple edits within our timeframe in what would have normally taken us 3-4 weeks by traditional storyboarding and animation pipeline previz.
Our belief in virtual production and the value of real-time visualization is at the forefront of our workflow and, in fact our entire philosophy for Versatile's pipeline.
