I had a mixed reaction to the compact audio disk when I first started buying them in the mid-80s. I liked the way they sounded, but I was less happy with the packaging of the artifact itself. The large album covers and sleeves of vinyl records were great companions to my music listening, helping with the immersion. CD jewel cases were smaller in every way, and much less satisfying. It took some years for the industry to start designing nicer packaging, and we'll look at a few examples of that in this video.
A few of these bands remind me of specific chapters of my life. Sometimes we're really into a band for a while, and for that time, that music becomes a soundtrack for everything we do, becoming imprinted with the emotions and the nostalgia of that time. But then our tastes change, or the band changes, or other factors take place that move us along to other things, and the music becomes a kind of time capsule for us, trapped in the amber of our memory, forever linked with that earlier version of ourselves.
Are there any bands or songs that are like that for you?
