Students join more than 1000 others across North American to celebrate Braille skills. Braille Challenge®, comprised of competitors ages 6-18, is the only national reading and writing contest in Braille for blind and visually impaired students. Across the country, more than 1000 children participate in the academic competition designed to motivate students emphasizing their study of Braille while rewarding success with fun-filled, challenging local and national events. Any blind or visually impaired student who reads Braille is eligible to participate in this regional/first stage of the contest, giving even emerging Braille readers a chance to reach a personal best. The Braille Challenge tests Braille skills in five categories: reading comprehension, Braille spelling, chart and graph reading, proofreading and Braille speed and accuracy. The 60 students with the highest scores from around North America then go on to another day-long competition in June In Los Angeles testing their Braille skills alongside the best in the country.
