Here is how The Happy Scrapper melts his gold!
Notes:
The circular motion distributes heat around the entire dish, and the flame pushes slightly on the molten gold, the circular motion helps influence the circular "button" shape.
What wasn't filmed... I needed both hands and couldn't film.. using melt dish tongs, I carefully lift the dish enough to tip it around a bit, allowing any tiny gold pieces to attach to the main mass. I then carefully set it back down, turn off the torch, and allow say 10 seconds before using tweezers to pluck the gold from the dish. This is something that requires practice and a careful hand, because the borax is extremely thick and sticky... the longer you wait, the harder it is to remove.
Borax is water soluble, so any remaining borax on the gold can be removed by boiling the gold in a pot on the stove for an hour or two. Be careful not to forget about it and boil it dry as this would then become a huge fire hazard.
Your melt dish can be cleaned in the same fashion. Boil it as the borax is water soluble... however this time there will be gold in your water as there will be fine gold particles trapped within the borax, and as the borax dissolves it will release all gold particles.
Dry your melt dish for at least 48 hours in the open, then bake it in a toaster oven at like 300 degrees to be sure all moisture is removed from your dish before applying a torch again, any moisture in your dish at extreme heat will cause the dish to explode.
