STORYLINE
Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad arrived in Cuba on Wednesday on the third stop of a Latin American tour.
He was met at Havana's Jose Marti International Airport by Cuban Vice-President Esteban Lazo.
He will spend less than 24 hours on the island, but is expected to meet both President Raul Castro, and his ailing brother, former President Fidel Castro.
Ahmadinejad will also give a speech at the University of Havana.
Before Cuba, the Iranian president visited Venezuela and Nicaragua.
He has been promoting friendships with allies in the Americas, shortly after Washington imposed tougher sanctions on Tehran over its nuclear programme.
Cuba, Venezuela, Nicaragua, and Ecuador have rejected efforts to "demonise" Ahmadinejad and his government, and are critical of US actions on Iran.
The US and other countries say that Iran is attempting to develop nuclear weapons.
Tehran denies the accusations and maintains that the programme is purely for peaceful purposes.
Ahmadinejad travels to Ecuador on Thursday.
