Last night I was thinking about the Esbit Solid Fuel Stove Set time to boil problem and wondered if this might be similar to the canteen cup stove problem. You may remember a couple of old labs that I did where I tested the stove with the canteen cup in it and another where I rotated the cup 180°. The 180° cup boiled faster because the heat could run up the sides of the cup.
In this video I do a boil test on the Esbit Solid Fuel Stove Set using my Cottle Vertical Wick burner but I use two nails on the top of the pot stand so that there is a gap between the pot and the stand. Normally the pot is down in the pot stand and blocks the heat and flames from running up the side.
Interestingly the time to boil dropped from 8 minutes 12 seconds to 5 minutes 41 seconds. A savings of 2 minutes 31 seconds. Cool, maybe this is a start in the right direction.
