STORYLINE:
The Tibetan Peace Torch that has gone around the world to raise awareness about China's tight grip on Tibet arrived on Sunday in Dharamsala in India, seat of the exiled Tibetan government.
About a thousand Tibetan exiles turned out in the pouring rain to welcome the arrival of the torch, by shouting pro-freedom slogans and carrying Tibetan flags.
The torch, wrapped in Tibetan ceremonial scarves called 'khata', was carried around town by runners led by motorcyclists.
The Tibetan freedom torch began its journey in Olympia, Greece, much like the official international Olympic torch relay, on March 10 and travelled through several countries for nearly four months before arriving in New Delhi.
It travelled across 50 cities in Europe, America, Canada, Mexico, New Zealand, Taiwan and Uruguay.
Tenzin Choeying, the head of Students for a Free Tibet, told AP Television the significance of the alternative torch relay this year.
"Tibetan freedom torch this year has a special significance because the Chinese government is holding the 2008 Beijing Olympics," Choeying said.
"We want to send a direct message that aspirations of Tibetan people, that is freedom for Tibet, will continue," he added.
After the torch arrived in New Delhi on July 10, it went around the country spreading the message of justice and freedom for Tibetans.
