People always ask me, ‘What’s the difference between a brownstone and a townhouse?’ A brownstone can be a townhouse, but a townhouse isn’t necessarily a brownstone!
So what does that mean exactly?
Brownstones are made of sandstone, not of brick. So if you see a townhouse that is made of brick, it isn’t a brownstone. The bottom line is that it’s a commonly misused word. Brownstone does not represent whether it’s a single-family or multi-family. Same for a townhouse. A townhouse or a brownstone can be either.
The reality is that it’s an architectural detail that makes the difference!
