In this video we review the shootout between Napa County (CA) Sheriff deputy Riley Jarecki and suspect Javier Hernandez Morales who was killed in the shootout.
One of the things that many noted in the body cam video was the fact that the officer's hand-held flashlight was directed at and shining on herself as she fired at the suspect. This was most likely caused by her fast response of drawing and gripping her weapon with the flashlight in her support hand. This was a pure muscle memory action and no fault of the deputy in any way whatsoever. The necessity of having to hold a flashlight in her hand caused this to happen. And for those who state that having a weapon mounted light would have helped avoid this situation...think again. Her weapon was NOT drawn upon approaching Morales in the vehicle. Officers almost never have their weapon drawn when approaching a vehicle. Therefore, even with a weapon mounted light, she would have had a flashlight in her hand upon approach. And said light would have STILL done the same thing upon drawing her weapon.
In this video our Founder and CEO, Suresh Madhavan (13 year law enforcement veteran and firearms instructor), re-enacts this shootout and discusses how this flashlight malfunction could have been avoided...which is the partially the basis for his inventing The 221B Tactical Exxtremity Light System hands free flashlight.
