For this week's wolf blog, Kourtney was able to go to the Howling Mad March in Santa Fe, New Mexico. This was a peaceful march that was raising attention for Mexican Gray wolves in New Mexico. There are just six breeding pairs of Mexican Gray wolves in New Mexico. Between Arizona and New Mexico, there is less than 97 Mexican Gray Wolves. At the last count, inbreeding was seen to be causing wolf moms to have fewer pups. New Mexico and Arizona’s endangered Mexican Gray wolves need genetic diversity. This would entail releasing more wolves from captivity into the wild. At the Colorado Wolf and Wildlife Center, we have two female Mexican Grays. We have been speaking about this topic for years. New Mexico's Governor Martinez has cynically blocked releases. Some of these politicians and locals want this species to go EXTINCT. Extinction is FOREVER. There are ways to raise livestock in areas where wolves are living. Co-existing IS possible. Please call governor Martinez' office to tell them you want the Mexican Gray to have genetic diversity and to continue roaming in this part of our country. Tweet, call, email, write letters. HELP MEXICAN GRAY WOLVES!! We want to ensure everyone that this was a respectful, peaceful, and just march. Thank you for watching.
