Knowing how to write your PhD discussion and conclusion chapters involves understanding the fundamentally different functions that each of these chapters fulfil in your thesis.
In a PhD thesis, the discussion chapter is like answering "So, what?" after doing a study. Once you've finished your own research, it's important to think about what it all means. How does your study fit in with what other researchers have found? What new things does your research bring to the table? And it's important to be honest about any limitations or problems with your study.
But the conclusion chapter is where you really zoom out and look at the big picture. Here, you take a step back and reflect on everything you've discovered throughout your research journey. You pick out the most important lessons and insights that your study has revealed.
This is a crucial moment because it's not just about what you've found, but also about what could come next because of it. You start thinking about the broader implications of your research. How might it change the way people think or act in your field? What new questions does it raise for future researchers to explore?
The conclusion chapter is like the final punctuation mark at the end of a long sentence. It's your chance to wrap everything up neatly and leave your readers with a clear understanding of the significance of your work. So, while the discussion chapter dives deep into the details, the conclusion chapter pulls back to give you the full picture of what your research means for the world.
