Bhanga Gaan: Derived from a Kannada song Chaari Varsha Paryanta ....
Notes: Published in spring, 1884.
In the last decade of nineteenth century a few people in the Tthakurbari was having their hands with harmonizing songs. Rabindranath too was interested in the experiment. The Aasharh (June/July) number of 1301B (1894) of Saadhana contained the harmonized notation of the song Pathahaara tumi pothiko jeno go... In the same time in Bhaarati the notation of this song, harmonized by Sarala Devi was published. In her book Jiboner Jhorapaata (3 rd part, page 5) Sarala Devi has indicated to a positive interest the poet taken for the conversions -
... I was only twelve, Rabi-mama came to Kaasiyabaagan on my birthday, a manuscript copybook of Staff Notations in his hand. In a descent and bold handwriting it was inscribed on its cover 'Socatore - composed by Sarala'.
I had converted this song, a Brahma Sangeet written and composed by him to a typical Western instrumental 'piece'. A complete English piece, suitable for playing on a band or a piano. Hardly one could identify the song inherent within. It would be revealed only to a serious follower as the main theme was camouflaged behind chords and complicated variety of notes right through all three octaves.
It was written within my brain in layers. It would come out naturally whenever it was required. Rabi-mama handed over the copybook to me saying - 'Write it down before you forget.'
This seems to be an incident around 1884. Harmonizing songs did continue thereafter at Tthakurbari. Another such song being Shaanto ha re mamo chitto niraakul... Indira Devi had referred to an incident when the poet had asked her along with her elder brother, Surendranath, to compose a theme music for piano using the poem Nirjharer Swapnobhango written by him. He had also promised a prize for the best one.
