I made a record of solo guitar improvisations intended to be listened to as a soundtrack to personal memories. The guitar improvisations were done in-the-moment: the process was to invent a tuning, create an improvisation framework, and record a few takes. The titles of the song on the record, such as "Hope" here, are simply personal identifiers connected to my own memories. They are not intrinsic to the music or to the visuals.
Musically I took inspiration Indian classical ragas, minimalist music, and contemporary practitioners of guitar improvisation such as Bill Orcutt.
I wanted to set the music to super8 footage, as the format has passed from everyday usage, and the very nature of it being a thing of the past connects it to the world of memories. What's more, super8 footage tends to preserve family memories, the type the music is intended to evoke.
The footage comes from archive.org's collection of super 8 footage, I do not own it nor do I know the people represented. If you own it or are represented and wish it removed, please contact me and I will do so.
This one shows a Japanese-American family's vacation to Lake Tahoe circa 1968.
