James Lord Pierpont wrote "Jingle Bells" in the 1850s as a tribute to sleighing. It was originally published under the title "The One Horse Open Sleigh" in 1857. Pierpont was inspired by the lively sleigh races near Simpson Tavern in Medford, Massachusetts.

Purpose

Pierpont originally wrote the song as a racy romance about an unchaperoned sleigh ride. It was intended to be sung for Thanksgiving, or as a drinking song.
