July being International Plastic Free month is a great opportunity to reflect upon the impacts of plastic waste.
Three Seabins have recently been installed in Fathom Five National Marine Park, and they have the ability to capture 1.4 tons of debris per season. In addition to removing garbage, the data from Seabin monitoring will provide crucial information on how clean the marine park’s waters are, and what types of garbage are most common. Check out our first deep dive of the season!
You, too, can help reduce plastic pollution. When possible, replace single-use plastics with reusable items. Bring a reusable water bottle to the park and fill it up at the water refill station at the Head of Trails (Campground Office, Visitor Centre). Next time you're in downtown Tobermory, check out Inspector Seabin at the dock by the Nor'light and sneak a peak at the Seabin at work.
If you’re interested in volunteering with the Seabin monitoring program as a citizen scientist, email inspectorseabin@sourcesofknowledge.ca.
