The glorious portraict of that Angels face,
Made to amaze weake mens confused skil:
and this worlds worthlesse glory to embase,
what pen, what pencill can expresse her fill?
For though he colours could deuize at will,
and eke his learned hand at pleasure guide:
least trembling it his workmanship should spill,
yet many wondrous things there are beside.
The sweet eye-glaunces, that like arrowes glide,
the charming smiles, that rob sence from the hart:
the louely pleasance and the lofty pride
cannot expressed be by any art.
A greater craftesmans hand thereto doth neede,
that can expresse the life of things indeed.
Notes:
amaze = astound, but also confuse
skill = reason, judgment, propriety
embase = lower, reduce in value
express her fill = express all of her without reduction of her angelic glory
eke his learnèd hand at pleasure guide = and also control his skilled hand at will
spill = ruin, damage, waste
pleasance = delight, pleasure
thereto doth need = is needed for this
the life of things indeed = things the way they truly are
Modernised Text:
The glorious portrait of that Angel's face,
Made to amaze weak men's confusèd skill,
and this world's worthless glory to embase;
what pen, what pencil can express her fill?
For though he colours could devise at will,
and eke his learnèd hand at pleasure guide,
lest trembling it his workmanship should spill;
yet many wondrous things there are beside:
The sweet eye-glances, that like arrows glide;
the charming smiles, that rob sense from the heart;
the lovely pleasance and the lofty pride,
cannot expressèd be by any art.
A greater craftsman's hand thereto doth need,
that can express the life of things indeed.
