Sigurd the Crusader made a pact with king Niels of Denmark to perform a crusade against Småland and force Christianity upon the pagans. Contemporary Swedish sources do confirm warfare between pagans and Norwegian crusaders in the south-eastern corner of Småland and on the island of Öland. The Norwegian crusader army reportedly successfully forced the inhabitants to submit to the Christian faith, and brought many valuables with them back to Norway. As Christianity grew, so did pagan persecution.
Paganism was considered blasphemous by Christians during the Middle Ages resulting in the loss of much information regarding Viking knowledge. Unfortunately for Norse historians, this means a lot of valuable knowledge was lost during the religious shift towards Christianity. So slowly not only berserkers but pagans as a whole would disappear, the beliefs of their ancestors became nothing but a memory and many teachings, values and philosophies have been lost to time.
