FINISFRIDAY Allegro 12/13/19 at Pearl Studios NYC.

This is the first Allegro session - preparing my ballet babies to dance across the floor in my 2nd level Beginner Ballet Classes at the Ailey Extension NYC.

The piqué arabesque on the diagonal is always included in this class.

First, students must use correct alignment - pointing the toe they will pose on between the ear and supporting shoulder. To help them see this, they begin with a fondu dégagé to fourth front where they can see where they point their toe.

After they are comfortable with this exercise, we will place them on the diagonal and include making the arabesque with a piqué. And, we will up the tempo.

Since they are stepping forward, they must use opposition - reaching back the ears, shoulders and arms so that they can step out and pose in arabesque. Instead of making a first arabesque position, I give them an open arabesque with both arms stretched out in second which will help them work their opposition and find their balance.

Facing the mirror also gives them a chance to make sure they are not dropping their ears and leaning their head over the supporting foot. When you pose in arabesque on the right foot, keep the weight of your head on the back shoulder so that you don't fall forward past your supporting foot.

When you place your posing foot, drive all your weight down into the floor while reaching out your arms and pointing the arabesque toe so the leg is stretched straight in the air.
