Elizabeth lives in Southern California. She has had a history of RK (Radial Keratotomy) surgery, AK (Astigmatic Keratotomy) surgery, LASIK surgery, cataract surgery with intraocular implants, YAG capsulotomy surgery, frag surgery, all on both eyes. The combination of all of these eye surgeries has left her visually impaired and severely debilitated. She has not been able to see well enough to drive since her cataract surgery. This is due to the optical interaction of the toric and multifocal intraocular lenses and the corneal surgeries (RK, AK, and LASIK) that had caused significant corneal irregularities, all resulting in very distorted vision. Since her cataract surgery she has sought care and resolution with many doctors in the Southern California area, including several contact lens fitters. Although some surgical options were suggested, she fortunately did not pursue any of those. She tried many different types of contact lens solutions, including scleral lenses, but unfortunately, all of these attempts failed to bring her any resolution to her visual handicap. She traveled to see Dr. Maller with the hope that some solution was possible to achieve. After examination and much discussion, it was decided that custom scleral lenses would be fit so that the distance vision would be the clearest possible. After achieving this, Elizabeth reconsidered because she felt that having vision for near would be needed more often and did not want to constantly be dependent on a pair of reading glasses, so the lenses were rebalanced for monovision so that one eye would be seeing distance well while the other eye provided near vision. To ensure that driving vision, particularly in the dark and poorer conditions such as rain, a pair of glasses was prescribed to wear over the contact lenses to maximize the quality of the distance vision. The contact lenses neutralize the distortions so that her vision is now 20/20 and of good quality once again. She is able to wear the lenses comfortably for her entire day and is enjoying good distance and near vision. She will only wear the glasses over the contact lenses, when she drives in dark or poor visibility conditions, freeing her from the glasses for the majority of her life.
