This is a white-eared ground sparrow (Melozone leucotis). These birds are supposedly timid but I would say the opposite as this pair doesn't seem to mind me getting close to them at all. I call this bird the most obnoxious creature alive because almost every single morning, a pair of these goes around pecking on all the windows of our house around 5:30 a.m. to 7:30 a.m. waking everyone in the house up. I have no idea why they do it but some suggested they are trying to drive off their reflection. I don't think so because they've been doing it for MONTHS!! Anyway, these are a large American sparrow with a very small range. They basically only live on the Pacific mountain slopes from Southern Mexico through western Costa Rica at altitudes from 1500 feet to 6500 feet. These birds are NOISY when they are hunting, sounding more like a dog going through the leaves than a small bird. As you can see in the video, these feed on small insects they find in leaves along with nuts and fruits. Enjoy!
