Welcome to Bowlers Paradise!
I think DV8 missed an opportunity not getting the rights to call this one Mr. Blue Sky. The all new chill pearl from DV8 is their newest big core shiny option. Equipped with that same high differential Diva 2.0 core from the original Chill, this one features the HK22 Inciter Max Flip pear cover finished to 1500 compound out of the box.
For the layout, I went with a much stronger layout than I normally would with a piece like this, but knowing that I have a bunch of super clean and flippy pieces, I went witha 3.5x4.5x4 2LS Layout. The shorter pin to PAP distance is the most notable variable here as with is being under 4", it should start the core up sooner and blend out the reaction a bit more effectively downlane.
AND ON THE LANES… I thought I was really going to fall in love with this one, but my initial grade is somewhere around a B to a B+. It's a good shape, don't get me wrong, but I wouldn't call it mind blowing. Interestingly enough, I see a lot of overlap with the original 900 Global Zen, so I'm sure a part of my hesitation is my strong layout, but the Chill Pearl seems to have a very specific place in an arsenal which we'll get to in a moment.
But my favorite part about throwing this one from DV8 was how I could absolutely crack on it, and it wouldn't do anything silly down lane. Although I didn't have to rev on it super hard to get it to do the right thing, the shape got better the faster I spun this one. That's not a spot I like to be forced into, but on the days where I just cant control my rev rate, but need control on the lanes, the Chill is going to do me a lot of favors.
On the list of potential downsides, I think you need to have some decent ball speed and rev rate to see the best shape out of this one. If you want to be able to move in with the Chill Pearl, you're going to need to be able to get on it and make sure it gets through the pins. Lower rev rate players may struggle with carry while lower speed players may struggle with keeping this one on the correct side of the headpin.
So If I were to carry this one with me, I'd probably put it alongside a Track Theorem as well as a Hammer Hazmat. The Theorem is arguably brunswick's best release of the last year and would be good in the same part of the lane as the Chill, and then the hazmat is much quicker downlane than then chill. I wouldn't be a perfect arsenal, but you'd be able to score on just about any league shot with it.
Jumping to our cross brand comparisons, we first took a look at the Summit Peak from Storm and here I see the lower RG of the summit peak being the biggest differentiating factor. 3 points worth of a difference might not seem like much, but it's clear how much faster this one spins up and when it's right, will probably beat the Chill pearl, but the times its right will be few and far between.
Then we took a look at the Kaboom from Columbia 300, and here the differences are more subtle, but still based on the RG of the ball. The Kaboom is well, boomier than the Chill and with that, is more continuous through the pins. This shape would likely be easier to use than the Chill if you have a lower ball speed.
But with that, here’s my recommendations on types of bowlers that I think would match up well with this piece. The first is High tilt players. High tilt player are pretty much untouchable when they can stay in the friction and with the chill pearl, they'll be able to stay in the friction longer. The Chill's combination of being clean and smooth is a great shape for these players.
The second recommendation is for Sport bowlers. Because this one reminds me quite a bit of the original Zen, I think there's a place in many tournament bags for this one from DV8. on burned up tournament shots you still have to control the pocket so super angular pieces aren't an option, and the Chill Pearl fits right in the under that to give you what you need when the conditions are tough.
The all new DV8 Chill pearl is exactly that, a chill pearl, but in the right hands, could be the ticket to heating up your scoreboard.
