Members of law enforcement testify on police policies and procedures in the murder trial of Derek Chauvin as the jury considers the former officer's actions during the arrest of George Floyd. The prosecution attempted to cut to the heart of the defense's argument that then-Minneapolis Police Officer Chauvin was following his training when he knelt on George Floyd's neck for over nine minutes. Lt Johnny Mercil, the Use-of-Force Instructor for the Minneapolis Police Department, says "We don't train leg-neck restraints with officers in service, and as far as I know, we never have." The instructor, who trained Chauvin, testified that officers are trained to only use force that is proportional to the threat. Witnesses also said officers are required to de-escalate situations and render aid. But in cross examination, the defense maintained Chauvin's actions were appropriate and argued use of force depends on the situation.
