Civil servants in #Tbilisi joined #protests against the ruling #Georgian Dream party on Wednesday, December 11. A group of public sector employees were joined by colleagues who have already resigned in protests over the government's freeze on moves toward joining the European Union.
Protests over the October 26th elections that returned the ruling #Georgian Dream party to power but were described by critics as fraudulent have escalated since the government's announcement that it was putting a brake on efforts to join the European Union. Opponents have accused Georgian Dream of sacrificing relations with the E.U. in favour of closer ties with #Russia
The civil servants gathered at Republic #Square before marching to Rustaveli Avenue, where most of the recent protests have taken place.
This footage was shot by #Tbilisi-based journalist Mariam Nikuradze, co-founder and executive director of independent news outlet OC Media. Nikuradze was questioned by a court on Tuesday over the protests, which she has covered daily.
Questioning was mostly general questions about protests, if I had any info on organisers or calling for violence. They didn't express interest in my footage, but was weirdly specific questions on how I looked and what I wore. I don't know much, but so far it seems, I'll be ok.
