Summary:
Chia seeds help with blood sugar control, help lower blood pressure, they are high in nutrients that help your bone, and also, they can help with weight loss. Now if chia seeds provide all of these benefits it may be safe to consume lots of them every day, right? Well, not quite. You see, studies suggest that consuming too many chia seeds could lead to certain side effects and in this video, we will be sharing them with you.
#1. Digestive issues: A 28 gram serving of chia seeds contain about 11 grams of fiber and as we know fiber helps to support your good gut bacteria and boost poop regularity but consuming too much fiber may cause problems for some people. Most times when you consume fiber without drinking enough water you may experience constipation, abdominal pain, gas, and bloating. This is because fiber requires a lot of water to effectively pass through the digestive system. You may also experience these symptoms including diarrhea if you consume too much fiber. To combat these symptoms, you can consume only a few chia seeds at a time and slowly increase your intake as needed while drinking enough water. It should be noted that individuals who suffer from inflammatory bowel diseases such as Crohn’s disease or ulcerative colitis should limit their intake of chia seeds during flareups as these chronic diseases could cause inflammation which narrows the gastrointestinal tract and lead to diarrhea, abdominal pain, bleeding, and weight loss.
#2. ALA in Chia seeds may lead to prostate cancer: ALA is a type of omega-3 fatty acid and chia seeds are a great source of it. Now omega 3 has been known to be beneficial for health, however, one large 2013 study revealed that there’s a link between the intake of ALA and advanced prostate cancer. In another study, it was concluded that individuals who have the highest blood concentration of omega-3 fatty acids have a higher risk of prostate cancer when compared with those who had lower concentrations of omega-3 fatty acids in their blood. Take note that these studies only looked at the link between ALA intake and prostate cancer and did not consider other factors that could have brought about this conclusion. #3. They can pose a choking risk: Now we’ll begin by saying that chia seeds are safe to eat, however, dry chia seeds do absorb up to 12 times their weight in liquid when they are exposed to moisture which makes them swell and have the potential to get lodged in the throat. #4. It may cause interactions with some medications: Studies suggest that eating chia seeds can help to lower blood sugar and blood pressure levels. However, if you’re on blood pressure or blood sugar medications, you may want to be careful with your consumption of chia seeds. #5. It may cause allergic reactions: Allergies to chia seeds are very rare however, in one case, a middle-aged man who began eating chia seeds started experiencing dizziness, shortness of breath, swelling, and hives a few days later.
