Flying a Cessna TTx across Southeast Alaska was the experience of a lifetime, visiting legendary places like Ketchikan, Sitka, Juneau, Valdez, Merrill Field in Anchorage, and many more.
Alaska in the early fall provided us with very challenging conditions: gale force winds, low ceilings, and icing were all on the menu. Add to that the quirks of Alaskan IFR operations, climbs all the way to the flight levels, and some of the most challenging instrument procedures in the country (including an LDA down to minimum, an LDA with lead-in lights, circling RNAVs, and complex ODPs), and this made for a very instructional trip. The capabilities of the Cessna TTx with its Garmin G2000, turbocharged engine, and FIKI (Flight Into Known Icing) were of great help throughout the trip.
Thankfully, a 36-hour break in the weather allowed to capture the breathtaking scenery, including fantastic views over Denali, the highest summit in North America, and the Bering Glacier, the largest in the US.
