This lecture explores the life of Liaquat Ali Khan, the first Prime Minister of Pakistan, in the years before 1947. Mohammad Ali Jinnah appointed Liaquat the General-Secretary of the All-India Muslim League (AIML) in 1936, and he became the coordinator of League activities in the provinces and in New Delhi, including the creation of the League’s newspaper, Dawn. Liaquat developed a close relationship with Jinnah, who, in 1939 appointed him one of the executors of his will, and in 1943, called him my “right hand”. This lecture will touch on Liaquat’s background, personality and career including his ancestry, his family, his loves and hobbies, his education at Aligarh and Oxford and his personality and intellectual make-up, as well his devotion to the ideals of Sir Syed Ahmad Khan, Iqbal, and Jinnah. The lecture traces his development from being a regional politician to becoming a pillar of the AIML.
