Banana hath charms to soothe a cranky battie!
A slight deviation from the original line but very true nonetheless. Rescued by Nanette out of fruit tree netting last weekend, this lovely boy was a little feisty until he spied the banana.
With the end of the summer growing season fast approaching, we have been blessed with abundant rainfall. Rain is good news for the coming winter but it's not such good news for hungry bat bellies.
Although there is a magnificent array of native flowering occurring, rain washes the nectar and pollen out of the blossom and flying-foxes are forced to seek sustenance elsewhere.
As a result we get an increased number of calls for bats trapped in large aperture fruit tree netting during and after rain events. We have had a run of netting rescues lately and all have involved very large, healthy adult males.
With mating season just around the corner, the big boys are gearing up for a hectic 4 to 6 weeks of fun and frivolity and they are beefing up in anticipation!
Please net, grow and harvest sustainably.
Never use any netting you can poke your finger through and use shadecloth or a similar weave to protect your fruit.
Even better still, take what you need and share the rest with our wildlife.
