The Falklands War, also known as the Malvinas War, was a ten-week conflict between Argentina and the United Kingdom in 1982 over two British dependent territories in the South Atlantic: the Falkland Islands and South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands. The war began on April 2, 1982, when Argentine forces invaded and occupied the Falkland Islands and South Georgia. The British government, led by Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, responded by dispatching a naval task force to engage the Argentine Navy and Air Force before making an amphibious assault on the islands. The conflict lasted 74 days and ended with the Argentine surrender on June 14, 1982, returning the islands to British control. In total, the war claimed the lives of 649 Argentine military personnel, 255 British military personnel, and three Falkland Islanders.
The Falklands War had profound effects on both countries. For the United Kingdom, it reinforced the notion of the country’s resolve and military capability, which arguably restored national pride after a period of economic and social malaise. For Argentina, the war was a devastating blow. The defeat discredited the ruling military junta, which had gambled on the conflict to boost nationalistic fervor and distract from domestic issues. The loss led to large protests and civil unrest, which played a significant role in the return to democratic governance in 1983. The war also had lasting effects on the geopolitical landscape of the South Atlantic region and remains a poignant memory for both nations.
CAUTION!
I won't tolerate any racist, discriminatory or in any other form inappropriate comments! This song neither glorifies war, nor National Socialism, but should be considered as a historical work.
"No, we don't glorify anything, we just tell stories about things that have happened." (Rikard Sundén, Sabaton)
