In WWII a long range navigation tool was needed and developed. Loran long range navigation system was installed in bombers, allowing long range (up to 1,450 miles) accurate navigation. The system was simple to operate, obtained quick fixes and was used mainly by the 21st bomber commands B-29 bombing flying from The marinas island chain to Japan and back.
