Graeme Revell composed the score to The 13th Warrior, but after reshoots and a change of director the score was dropped and famed composer Jerry Goldsmith was tasked with crafting a new score for the reworked movie. Like many gems, The 13th Warrior was badly received in its own time and hailed as a triumph by audiences later. The 13th Warrior Rejected Score features the discarded score by Graeme Revell. While most of Jerry Goldsmith’s masterful score focused on the Viking elements of the story, Graeme Revell focused on the title character’s native musical traditions. As a fan of both The 13th Warrior and of Jerry Goldsmith, I admit that I much prefer the strong choruses, the percussions, and the horns of Goldsmith. Yet, it can’t be denied that Graeme Revell gave us a score that was authentic to the culture and allowed us to connect with the title character in a way that Jerry Goldsmith’s exceptional score did not.
