There are so many beautiful viewpoints on the way from El Chalten to El Calafate in Argentine Patagonia! The road winds by Lago Argentino, where you can see the steppe, the mountains, the glaciers, animals, and so on!
And one of the main reasons why I recommend renting a car in Patagonia instead of using buses is exactly this - you can stop wherever and just enjoy the views on your own accord. The bus just doesn't offer this option.
