The Archbishop of Canterbury, Justin Welby, has resigned following a report revealing the Church of England's cover-up of child abuse by barrister John Smyth QC.
The Makin review detailed Smyth’s abuse of about 130 boys and young men over 50 years in the UK and Africa which suggested Smyth might have faced justice if Welby had reported the abuse to police when he became archbishop in 2013.
In his resignation letter, Welby acknowledged his failure and took responsibility for the Church's inaction over the past decade.
