STORYLINE
An AP Television crew embedded with the 82nd Airborne Division of the US Army in Iraq filmed US troops as a firefight raged nearby on Wednesday night in the vicinity of the controversial barrier surrounding part of the Baghdad suburb of Adhamiyah.
Gunfire could be heard as US soldiers scrambled into position and tracer fire could be seen in the night sky.
The barrier is purportedly being erected to protect a Sunni enclave in the mostly Shiite neighbourhood of Adhamiyah.
According to the Iraqi government and US military, the Sunni enclave was being used as a base by Sunni insurgents to launch attacks into the surrounding Shia community, and to hide stockpiles of explosives and ammunition there.
The US military's justification for the wall was to create a safe area for the Sunni population and to restrict vehicle traffic into the area by routing vehicles through security check points, without restricting movement in and out on foot.
The wall is now complete in the North sector, construction is currently underway of the section running down the East side from North to South, along what is known as Route Brewer, a main two lane highway leading into downtown Baghdad.
Regionally, fears of a capital city divided raised the spectre of a Berlin wall type scenario in Baghdad when news of the structure first broke.
The Arab World also associates such a barrier or wall with the hated structure Israel has built, forcibly separating the Palestinian population from Israeli citizens, cutting into swathes of the West Bank.
