(7 Oct 2020) Malaysia recorded a total of 489 new confirmed cases of COVID-19 virus on Wednesday, as the steady increase in cases in the past week have raised concerns among its citizens.
The health ministry has warned that Malaysia is facing a new wave of virus cases as the outbreak has widened in recent days.
New clusters have sprung up in many states amid increased travel to eastern Sabah state, a hotspot zone, for a state election last month.
Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin is self-quarantining after a Cabinet minister he was in contact with tested positive for the coronavirus.
Malaysia’s police chief and the health director-general also attended the meeting and are isolating at home.
Coronavirus cases in Malaysia spiked to a new daily record of 691 on Tuesday.
There’s been four new deaths, including a one-year-old baby.
The cases Tuesday pushed the totals to 13,504 infections and 141 deaths.
However Muhyiddin ruled out another national lockdown, saying measures will be targeted to curb transmission in hotspot zones.
