This video shows one of the easiest methods for adding color to a black and white photo in Gimp.
Steps:
1. Open the black and white image
2. (if necessary) Adjust the original brightness-contrast in menu Color - Level
3. Open a color reference image, to select colors from using the Color Picker tool
4. Create a new transparent layer on top of the black and white image
5. Change the mode of this layer to Overlay
6. Select the Brush tool and choose a brush with soft/blurry edges.
7. Select the brush size/thickness. Begin drawing on this layer. If you go beyond the borders, you can always use Undo or the eraser tool.
8. Once the area is colored, the selected layer can be adjusted using Colors - Hue / Chroma
9. You can also shade the edges of the object with the Blur / Sharpen Tool, including blur in its settings
10. Repeat these steps for as many layers a necessary. Avoid using multiples colors on the same layer.
