The richness and diversity of fossilized remains at Monte San Giorgio are unmatched anywhere in the world. In 2004, UNESCO recognized this mountain, which straddles the border between Switzerland and Italy, as a transboundary World Heritage Site. Beautifully set against a stunning landscape above Lake Lugano, Monte San Giorgio stands at 1,096 meters.
The mountain safeguards the secrets of life’s prehistoric past, spanning more than 200 million years and tracing the origins of humanity itself. Fossilized marine reptiles from the Middle Triassic period were first uncovered here in the early 20th century, and the site’s potential is far from fully explored.
Even the mountain’s finely layered limestone, formed over millions of years, stands as a record of ancient epochs. Modern excavations continue to reveal fossils from over 200 million years ago, offering discoveries that fill gaps in our understanding of life’s evolutionary history.
