Agricultural land has the potential to absorb large quantities of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and work as a carbon sink, but it is currently a major source of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.
To address the issue of damaged soils caused by decades of intensive agriculture, the EU is promoting carbon farming as a new business model to deliver climate action in agriculture.
The new carbon farming focus in the EU presents new opportunities for the regeneration of soils with benefits for climate, but also for biodiversity, farm profitability, and resilience.
To deliver what we call win-win-wins for nature, climate and farmers carbon farming must adopt a holistic approach, grounded in the framework of nature-based solutions. For more information check this summary of EEB’s view on carbon farming [ Ссылка ]
To maximise the benefits of carbon farming and support farmers’ transition to regenerative agriculture practices the EU must put in place a viable policy and regulatory framework.
