Barbra Streisand's second film was the screen adaptation of the long-running Broadway musical by Jerry Herman. The film was directed by Gene Kelly, screenplay by Ernest Lehman, adapting the musical based on Thornton Wilder's 1955 play "The Matchmaker" which itself was a revision of Wilder's 1938 play "The Merchant of Yonkers" (based on a story whose origins go back as far as 1942). The big-budget screen adaptation starred Walter Matthau, Michael Crawford, and Louis Armstrong.
