The websites of Rafaël Rozendaal are between arcade games and digital paintings, a constellation of interactive aesthetics attracting an audience of over 40 million visits per year. What's innovative about these sites isn't just that they are sold to collectors as works of art, and recoded to include that information, but that they invert relationships between web content and URL, and between viewer and visitor, as whimsical, poetic titles such as broken self .com, much better than this .com, and into time .us frame and gently influence each user's unique interaction with otherwise abstract vectors, sounds and colors. His IRL work transforms these sites into spatial experiences of light and geometry.
In this video, Rozendaal unveils a website he created based on the URL nothing ever happens . com, which was submitted to him by YouTube user bestfriendbed for MOCAtv's The URL Project. The resulting work is hypnotic and enigmatic, a generative animation which dares the viewer to continue in anticipation.
