Typhoon Kong-rey continues to close in on Taiwan. The Central Weather Administration issued a land warning in the early hours of Wednesday. It estimates that the periphery of the typhoon will come into contact with Taiwan proper in late night tonight, and make landfall after midday on Thursday south of Hualien. Once it lands tomorrow, it’ll become the first-ever typhoon to do so in late October since records started in 1958.
Forecasters say the storm has a 320-kilometer radius. If it stays the same size after it lands in Taiwan, it’ll be the largest typhoon to make landfall in 28 years. Its impact cannot be understated: there’ll be extremely heavy rains and strong winds everywhere in Taiwan on Thursday. On Green Island, winds are expected to surpass Level 12 on the Beaufort scale.
