Pangot Village is located about 13 kilometers from Nainital in Uttarakhand. Kilbury Bird Sanctuary is just 3 kms away from Pangoot. There are 580 species of birds which makes it an ideal location for bird lovers.
Kilbury is a dense forest situated at an altitude of 8300 feets (2528 Mtrs) above the sea level. It is the reserve forest of Nainital. The place is calm and serene and the occasional sounds made by birds are just pleasant to the ears.
No entry fee is charged to tourists or visitors. The sanctuary is the best place to spend an entire day for trekking and bird watching. The best way to explore the Kilbury Bird Sanctuary is to visit in the early hours of the day and get going as the sun sets. The area is large and can take up an entire day to go around. Kilbury is picturesque picnic spot as well . Kilbury is located at a altitude of 2528 mtrs ASL, Kilbury is enclosed by flourishing green thick jungle of oak, pine & rhododendron.
Pangot perhaps has one of the best sunsets where you can see the sun going down the clouds while setting.
Target birds to watch for are Cheer Pheasant, Khalij Pheasant, Koklas Pheasant, Collared Grosbeaks, Rufous-bellied woodpecker, European Goldfinch, Rufous-bellied Niltava, variety of thrushes, spotted & slaty-backed forktail etc. Other birds include lammergeier, Himalayan griffon, blue-winged minla,etc.
A lot of Mammals can be spotted here such as Leopard cat, yellow-throated martin, Palm Civets, Sambar, Himalayan Goral, Barking deer, Wild Boar, Red Fox, Porcupine etc.
Kathgodam is the nearest railway station at a distance of about 20 kilometres. Both bus and taxi services are abundant and are also available at reasonable rates. If you are landing in the Pant Nagar airport, you can take a cab and it will take about 2.5-3.5 hours to reach the sanctuary. It is also pretty close to the main city of Nainital and you can avail either public transport or book a private ride.
