This video will help train your ear to hear the difference between the /æ/ as in BLACK vowel sound and the /ɛ/ as in RED vowel sound. Listen to each Minimal Pair and repeat the words aloud. (Minimal Pairs are two words that sound the same EXCEPT FOR one sound.)
To make the /æ/ as in BLACK sound, the mouth is open and the lips are NOT rounded. The edges of the mouth pull slightly to the sides making more of a rectangular shape. The tongue is flat on the floor of the mouth.
To make the /ɛ/ as in RED sound, the tongue is relaxed in the mid-high position. The lips are also relaxed and are farther apart than for the /ei/ as in GRAY sound.
