I believe that to combat the challenges facing our food systems we need to understand how the food that we eat gets to our plates. Personally, I wanted to see how an animal in a field becomes the cellophane-wrapped products we buy on supermarket shelves because, ultimately, I want to understand whether we should be eating meat at all.
Martin McIntyre runs a farming, slaughter, and butchery operation in The Yorkshire Dales and as he supplies a lot of the meat for my business, Yorkshire Handmade Pies, I asked him if he’d be willing to grant us access to the slaughter process. Very graciously he said yes, and so in this film we show the entire slaughter process of some lambs that Martin has raised on the fields right next to his abbatoir.
The question of eating meat is a tricky subject with lots of considerations. I don’t think a blanket approach to the subject is correct, as there are many nuances to the argument. I hope this film shares some of these viewpoints, and if you have any thoughts, questions, or queries then we’d love to hear them in the comments section.
Lastly, I want to thank Martin, The Wensleydale Butcher, for allowing us access to his facilities and permitting us access to the entire slaughter process. Seeing an animal become a product in a matter of minutes is uncomfortable to watch, but if there is a way to kill an animal humanely and ethically for consumption, I think Martin and his staff do so, by running a very reputable operation with the highest standards of animal welfare.
