A parish in the municipality of Vila Franca de Xira, probably founded by the Arabs, Alhandra was a fishing and rural village until the beginning of the 20th century. Due to the improvement of the communication routes and its natural riches - such as the limestone of the hills and brackish water - the large-scale industry broke with the traditional treatment of its peasants and fishermen, who started to operate in locksmiths and carpentries, tile factories , brick and cement.
Most of the houses in Alhandra are from the turn and beginning of the last century, many of them with industrial tile coverings from the 19th century. From the art of iron you can also appreciate interesting balconies and balconies.
Along the Tagus, the fishermen's huts were demolished, but the boats lined up on the riverbank still show the village's fishing roots. The square Soeiro Pereira Gomes, designed by the sculptors João Duarte and João Afra, is another of the attractions of the riverside area, as well as the Bandstand, dating from 1934, and the Dr. Sousa Martins House Museum, which hosts temporary exhibitions and brings together a collection significant in the history of the parish.
On top of the hill that dominates Alhandra, since 1883, the monument commemorating the victory of the Linhas de Torres has been erected. It was placed precisely where the first line of military fortifications started, which contributed so much to the victory of the Portuguese-British troops during the French invasions. Leisure space widely used by the locals, it has a viewpoint from where you can see the Lezírias, the Tagus and the village.
The S.João partys mobilize the town every June for centuries. By tradition, bonfires are made, which the youngest jump at night, fireworks are set off, and a procession of boats on the Tagus can be watched.
