JoJo's Bizarre Adventure on the PS1 was an ambitious (and you might even say impossible) port. The OG PlayStation generally struggled to run Capcom’s CPS2 games and JoJo's Bizarre Adventure was originally developed for Capcom’s CP3 board. To put this in perspective, even the Sega Saturn, and its extra ram cartridges, never got a port of a CPS 3 game.
Based on this, you might think that it’s a horrible mess on Sony’s machine but it’s actually one of the better ports of Capcom’s 2D fighters for the PlayStation. There were, of course, some significant cuts to getting it running on the older hardware but for the most part, it looks and plays great!
So in this retro review, I’ll cover the various versions of the game, how the PlayStation port differs, how it stacks up against other Capcom fighting games on the platform and if it’s worth playing in 2022.
This review is based on the Pal version of the Jojo's bizarre adventure PlayStation game which does run slightly slower than the NTSC version at 50Hz. When I said it doesn't feel as fast as the arcade, this is most likely why, although I've not played the NTSC version so I can't be sure.
