Prado Regional Park: San Bernardino County Regional Park in Chino, CA
If you are like me, you feel like we have had more rain this year than ever before. But did you know that in 1937 and 1938 there was a massive flood that led to the construction of the Prado Dam and ultimately the building of the spot I am standing right now?
Welcome back to Chino and The Hills Secrets Exposed. I am your host, Thomas Ryan and Today we will be exploring the history and amenities of The Prado Regional Park.
Prado Regional Park is a 2,000-acre (8.1 km2) park in Chino. The park is open Daily: 7:30 AM to 5 PM. Admission is $8/car on the weekdays and $10/car on the weekends. Pedestrians are $3/person and dogs are $1/dog
As I mentioned, The park traces its origins to the Santa Ana River floods of 1937 and 1938, which prompted the construction of the Prado Dam in 1939. A state legislative report in 1961 judged that the area around the Prado Dam did "not possess the necessary features or meet the criteria for inclusion in the State Park System." However, the report recommended a county level administration of a park. In 1972, after community efforts, the State Water Commission approved a $1.3 million grant to help construct a county regional park at the Prado Dam. Prado Park officially opened on July 2, 1976.
The name Prado is derived from California’s early Spanish days when the countryside was known as a “prado” or meadow.
This park is loaded with outdoor recreation and adventure offering, fishing, camping, hiking, biking and nature trails, splash pad, disc golf and outstanding picnic facilities.
Prado Regional Park offers many options of camping and is dog-friendly. There are many camping choices including 75 full hookup sites, Group tent camping, Dump station, Hot showers and restrooms, ADA accessible restrooms and Fire rings.
Additional activities at the park include two 18-hole golf courses at El Prado Golf Course, an Olympic shooting range at Shoot Prado, an equestrian center at Prado Park Equestrian Center and an archery range by Oranco Bowmen Archery Club.
The Prado Park Equestrian Center (PPEC) is situated on 14 acres and is home to over 100 horses. The equestrian center offers boarding as well as horseback riding and holds annual horse shows and community riding events throughout the year.
An upcoming event for the community is the Family Fish & Wildlife Festival on Saturday June 10th. This is your one-stop shop on fishing, camping, hunting, and outdoor recreation. Explore vendor booths, informative workshops, demonstrations, interactive nature walks, live music, and much more!
