The SAVE Act is a new bill that wants to change how people register to vote. Here's how it's different from the current law:
Right now:
- People can sign up to vote at places like the DMV or by mail.
- They just have to say they are U.S. citizens, but generally don't need to show proof.
The new bill wants to:
- Make people show proof that they are U.S. citizens when they sign up to vote.
- If someone can't show proof, they can give other evidence and sign a paper saying they're telling the truth.
- Have government offices share information to check if people are really citizens.
- Not charge money for checking if someone is a citizen.
- Take people off the voting list if it's found out they're not U.S. citizens.
The big change is that now people would need to prove they're citizens, not just say they are. This makes it harder to register to vote than it is now.
